I was there because I still wanted to believe in the Happy mondays but missed the intensity and the punkiness of the 89 gig. It looked like a well oiled machinery now, but where's the life, where's the spontaneity, the strength? Apart from Bez they all look like fat geezers drinking champagne and snorting coke ... you know what they looked soft ... After the show I went to the La locomotive club, as usual, and there was this room underground where they only played disco and who's there lost among the dancers drinking and snorting other than Shawn Rider .... he seemed to enjoy the moment ... Alexandrie Aah! Alexandrie Ohh! ....

Je suis venu car je voulais encore croire dans les Happy mondays mais l'intensité et le côté punk du concert de 89 ont cruellement fait défaut. C'est une machine bien huilée maintenant mais ou est la spontanéité, la puissance? A part Bez ils ressemblent tous à des gros types buvant du champagne et sniffant de la coke ... vous savez quoi ils ont l'air mou ... après le concert, je suis allé à la Locomotive, comme d'habitude et il y a cette salle en sous sol ou ils ne jouent que du disco et qui d'autre était là perdu au milieu des danceurs buvant et sniffant, que Shawn Rider ... il semblait apprécier l'instant ... Alexandrie Ahh! Alexandrie Ohh! ....

WORLD DOMINATION ENTREPRISE January 1991 - Entrepôt 18eme - The 'warehouse' night

This was one of my first attempts to went to a rave. It was organized by the UK acid artoïd mutoïd waste collectiv and it was a bit special. First because of the mutoïds' sculptures all over the place and most of all because one part of the warehouse was playing banging hardcore techno and the other part was where World domination entreprise played live. All in all it was quite mixed up but still people seemed to enjoy the night as it was something new. In fact you didn't knew how to act. For me and many of my friends it was the beginning of something that will last for years ... raving ... buying twelves ... clubbing ... buying twelves ... raving ... clubbing .... Finally one of them even got his name on top of the bill : Ivan Smagghe.

C'était une de mes premières tentatives d'aller en rave. C'était organisé de manière assez inattendue et bizarre par le combo punk artoïdo acid mutoïd waste. Leurs sculptures métalliques étaient disséminées un peu partout dans l'entrepôt mais ce qui était le plus étrange c'était la séparation de l'entrepôt en deux avec une partie consacrée à la techno et une autre au concert de World domination enterprise. L'un dans l'autre tout se mélangait allègrement mais les gens semblaient s'amuser, c'était nouveau, anormal. Pour moi et plusieurs de mes amis c'était le début de quelque chose qui allait durer des années ... aller en rave ... aller en club ... acheter des maxis ... aler en rave ... aller en club ... acheter des maxis ... finalement l'un d'entre eux allait même avoir son nom en haut de l'affiche : Ivan Smagghe.

BOB November 1990 - Manchester International club - The 'another planet' night

Pas facile de trouver ce club situé dans une rue mal éclairée d'une zone industrielle désolée ou tout à l'air abandonné. L'endroit n'est pas très grand et bondé, mélangeant encore toutes sortes de personnes; là encore l'ambiance est comme nul part en France. L'intensité est la même qu'à l'Hacienda même si on l'impression d'être dans la cuisine d'un appartement. Tout le monde à l'air de connaître tout le monde depuis tout le temps. Finalement c'est extrêmement motivant pour un petit groupe comme Bob d'avoir un tel répondant. La soirée est animée par Dave Aslam entre baggy et rave et chaque anthem reconnu déclenche sifflets et cris dans la foule.

It was hard to find the club as it was located in a dark and narrow street in an industrial derelict looking area. The place wasn't very large but is extremely crowded mixing again very different people; again the feeling was like nothing you can find in France. The intensity is the same as at the Hacienda, even if you feel like you're in the kitchen of an appartement during a party. Everybody seems to know everybody since forever. Finally it's very motivating for little bands like Bob to have such a big response from the crowd. The party was animated by Dave Aslam who mixed baggy songs with rave and each new anthem was instantly welcomed by a wave of whistles and screams.

BASSOMATIC / THE SHAMEN November 1990 - Manchester Hacienda - The 'mecca' night

Pendant ma première visite à Liverpool, j'avais pris le train pour Manchester pour voir l'Hacienda de mes yeux et je m'étais dit, il faut que tu reviennes pour y entrer. Graham Massey au comptoir d'Eastern bloc m'avait proposer de venir à une rave... Me voilà donc devant la porte ou se presse une longue queue. Le quartier, s'il est désolé en journée, s'anime à la tombée de la nuit avec plusieurs clubs, des pubs et autres chip chops, kebabs. Ca grouille et la tension est perceptible. Tant de personnes différentes se cotoient, étudiants, prolos, chômeurs, voyous, beaufs alcoolisés. A l'intérieur la même efervescence que dans la rue, ici chacun vit ces quelques heures intensémment. Pour ma part j'ouvre de grands yeux et observe. Bassomatic réalise une PA honorable en égrénant ses tubes "set the controls for the heart of the bass" et surtout "fascinating rhythms". Avant et après c'est un mélange de baggy, de garage et rave anthems ... mais déjà la folie acid house semble passée. A la sortie ayant involontairement doublé quelqu'un dans la file d'attente pour les taxis, je suis extrait d'une voiture par trois malabars bourrés à la carrure de rugbymen. Je demande pas mon reste mais les gratifie quand même d'un sonore "bastards!". Je suis revenu le lendemain pour les Shamen.

During my first visit to Liverpool I took the train to Manchester to see the Hacienda and I told myself I should comme back to get in. Graham Massey at the counter of Eastern bloc records shop ask me to come to a rave ... So I am in front of the doorway queuing with hundreds of clubgoers. The area was quite derelict during the day but it's another story in the evening when the clubs, pubs, chip chops and kebabs open. So many different people mixing, students, working class types, villains, big drunkheads, created some tension you could feel in the air. Inside it's exactely the same, people lived these few hours in the club with so much intensity. I opened big eyes and stare astonished. Bassomatic's PA was honorable. They played their hits like 'set the controls for the heart of the bass' and 'fascinating rythms'. Before and after it's a mix of baggy songs, garage and rave anthems ... but the acid house craze seemed to be behind us. Outside I make the unvoluntary error of getting into a taxi before my turn in the queue and was extracted from the car by three big pissed off rugbymen lookalike boys. I didn't protest but they get a sonorous 'bastards!'. I came back the next day to see the Shamen play.
