THE VERVE February 1994 - Passage du nord ouest - The 'teacher" night
Nobody cared for this gig, way before Verve become The Verve, except myself and my mate Ivan (Smagghe ... him again). We both like this kind of 'ecstasy' band but in fact our very true interest was for the first part as the magnetic Richard Ashcroft was meant to play a dj set on his own. This was a time where we were both up for everything balearic and particulary up for the rock verse of it and wooooah ! what a set it was. From the long Isaac Hayes hot buttered tracks to psychedelic and other soul rareties, obscure Bowie covers and lots of others unkown beauties. It was a lesson for both of us even if we couldn't track the songs he played as he was on the scene and trainspotting was impossible. This was a unique moment when you know that you were right against the whole world. People were asking you 'what is this balearic music?' and you tried to explain it 'you know shiny tracks but not dance tracks but tracks that was not meant to dance but that you could dance to with a house vibe...' and nobody understood what you mean. If they were present at this gig they would get all of it right in their faces.
