THE POLLEN/ADRIAN BORLAND/Mc CARTHY September 1988 - The 'Je passe une audition' night

Speaking of french bands, the Pollen were ahead of their time with some 60's and 80's sounds mixed together by an english singer (girl). Neither bad nor good. Many friend's of the band seemed to enjoy it. Rest of the crowd waits for it to end, very well behaved like. Left by his band The sound, Adrian Borland came alone on the stage, soaked by ale ... and you could tell he was all for it. Then the pollen's drummer and bass player joined him and sudenly something happened. Guy's get very punchy and all and the crowd appreciate. To say the truth more a happening than a real gig. Well, I was there for Mc carthy and what a disappointment it was! Too young, the band members coudn't restitute the cutting feeling of the songs which were dying in a sad uniformity. The singer looks friendly but the voice is weak. The guitar player is good but the bass player's fingers were too small ... sometimes it's nearly entertaining but then it dies again.

The pollen sont sans doute un peu en avance sur leur temps pour un groupe français avec une musique 60's passée à la moulinette 80's (que d'audace!) par une chanteuse anglaise. Ni désagréable ni agréable. Les amis du groupe, en nombre dans la salle, semble y prendre plaisir. Le reste du public attend bourgeoisement que ça se passe. Largué par son groupe The sound, Adrian Borland arrive seul sur scène, bouffi par la bière...et il en veut! Le batteur et le bassiste de the pollen le rejoignent et tout à coup l'émotion passe. Le type retrouve la pêche et le public ne s'y trompe pas. Plus happening que concert tout de même. Bon j'étais quand même venu pour Mac carthy et quelle déception! Trop juvénile, le groupe n'arrive pas à restituer l'aspect incisif des chansons, qui s'éteignent dans une morne uniformité. Le chanteur a l'air sympa mais la voix est faible. Le guitariste en herbe est bon, mais le bassiste a de trop petits doigts...parfois il y aura une étincelle mais pas d'incendie.
